Too bad it's so jumpy, but even as it is it's a great video. I guessed at the locomotive number and started Googling at 5021, finding 5021A that had the interesting back end (I guess made that way by the conversion for electric train power, in place of the the steam generator). Thanks for sharing!

wish there were more of these on YT.

True but this was definitly not filmed in the inner burbs like Park Ridge where I live.

I wish I could tell you where this was, but I have no idea. I was just a little kid at the time, and my dad, who was driving, is no longer with us.

Great old film. I was too young at first to know how cool that train line was, but just as a 19 year old I got a job downtown so I rode the commuter line every day. It was amazing. I am actually modeling the commuter line in HO now. Kato made the bi level cars, I am still looking for good CNW F3 or F7A engines with the mars lights. Thanks for sharing, Brought back lots of good memories.

@Jcuddle When I posted this little clip, I wasn't sure if anyone would care about seeing it, or not. I'm glad so many people have found some enjoyment from watching this.

I belong to a couple of yahoo groups reguarding the C&NW and most of the members suggested this was on the NW line between Barrington &Fox River Grove.

We did drive out Route 14 to Wauconda pretty frequently to visit relatives, so it's certainly possible that that's where this was. I wish I could remember more, but I was just too young at the time to really know where we were.

I figure this has to be the C&NW's Northwest or North line.
The west line doesn't have a road following it towards the very end and since this was probably filmed further out I figure it's 1 of those 2.
Of course the old NSL runs alongside as a bike trail though I think it slits off near Waukegan.

Keep in mind that in 1971 you didn't have to go nearly as far to be "further out" as you do now-a-days!
