Darfur

Darfur is a region of far western Sudan, bordering the Central African Republic, Libya, and Chad. An independent sultanate for several hundred years, it was incorporated into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces. The region is divided into three federal states: West Darfur, South Darfur, and North Darfur which are coordinated by a Transitional Darfur Regional Authority. Due to the Darfur Conflict, the region is in a state of humanitarian emergency.

The current tragedy in Darfur has been labelled by the UN as the 'world's worst humanitarian crisis'. At the end of November 2004, the estimated number of people driven from their homes was 1.5m -- thousands more are also said to have died mainly due to the effects of displacement like hunger, lack of safe drinking water and disease.

The solution to the conflict in Darfur hinges, to a large degree, on the eradication of abject poverty and the evils
associated with it.
