the correct understanding is to bury it and leave it, the cruelty and injustice in that book outweighs the good by at least five times as many, so really following that book does little good

Imagine an alcoholic who brags that drinking makes him smarter, healthier & kinder when in reality it makes him dumb, weak, mean & often dangerous. Would you accuse his substance abuse counselor of being “angry all the time”? Tell him to “just shut up”? Ask him “why do you even care”? The alcoholic probably would.

Many of us see religion as an unhealthy addiction & argue against it for the same reasons that might motivate a substance abuse counselor to combat alcoholism.

Hitchens was a very smart man, his reasoning was irrefutable. Thanks to him we can continue seeking truth. We still have many extraordinary atheists to count on, and that just gives me hope that one day we will finally be able to end religious nonsense and that future generations will be certain of the origin of life in the universe. I might not be alive when that happens but my kids or their kids will be.
