It's hard to belive now but in the mid 1800's this was a remote part of Chicago and used as a home for cholera victims and then became a public cemetary for the poor, victims of disease and about 4,000 rebel troops. During the Civil War Chicago was home to Andersonville a notorious prisoner of war facility.
As the city moved north people became uneasy about being so close to so many who had dies of communicable disease. So after Lincoln was assassinated the city decided to dig up the bodies and start turn the area into parkland. What we have today is over 1,200 acres of park hugging the lake. It is home for Peacefest and has a zoo lagoon, conservatory and just about everything else you find in parks. It is also home to some magnificent public art which we are also presenting on this station.
So here's the plaque and as you look around imagine less than 200 years ago it was nothing but swampland and dead bodies.
For more about the park and it's history check its Wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Park,_Chicago
