The Museum of America cameras go deep below decks aboard the USS Little Rock, a guided missile cruiser which is now a museum ship in Buffalo New York. Join host, Mannie Gentile as he is thwarted by locks and chains but still manages to sneak a peek at the innerworkings of this steel leviathan.

  • I was a Marine served on the Rock and rode her back to Philly for the decommision. Had some great times in Gaeta. Spent many nights sipping a cocktail in the GUT. I want to vsit the Rock some day and show my family where I served

  • I really think you'd enjoy it. The Marine Corps spaces are in pretty good condition and are usually accessible. I'm sure you family would be amazed at what you called "home".

    Best wishes,

    Mannie

  • Thanks for the nostalgia. I was an electrician's mate on The Rock from 1962-64. Took a trip up to Buffalo a few years ago to see her. While she looks good from the pier and on the main deck, below decks, other than the officer's quarters and museum spaces, she looks pretty sad compared to the spic and span shape she was in back then. Oh yeah, I was on the foretop a few times rigging dress ship lights in the Med! Wow, what memories, thanks again!

  • @pdunham1212 My ship was cut up for scrap 18 years ago.At least you can still visit your old home away from home.

  • My Boy Scout troop is going to Buffalo and that's gonna be our home sweet home for tomorrow night. Can't wait.

P.S. Did anyone ever die on the Rock?

  • I was just there a couple weeks ago, it was slightly depressing seeing the ships rotting beside the dock, but it was also quite nice to see how passionate the american people are about their history and its conservation. I hope the work can continue on all 3 of the ships docked there.

  • uss little rock the last us light cruiser

  • I visited USS Litle Rock back in Oct. 1964 when she was In Amsterdam (Netherlands) at Stony Head quay. I was 10 years old at that time and rather impressed by the guided missile performance.

Hope to visit Buffalo Naval Park in 2010.

  • my father served on the little rock

  • I was on the Rock also and rode her back to Philly. I was a Marine in the MARDET. I also have some very good memories of Gaeta.
