  • Drivers who survived this era -- like AJ, Mario Andretti and Johnny Rutherford -- deserve a salute.

  • This was in 1964, so death was nothing new in motorsports. Back then, death was just an everyday deal.

  • i will never forget seeing the back page of the ny daily news showing the sachs macdonald crash

  • @saulocpp A.J. Foyt won the INdy 500 and 24 hours of LeMans (with dan gurney) in 1967...the only racer to do that. Foyt won the Indy, Daytona 500, 24 hours of Daytona and 24 hours at LeMans - the only driver to that. Ask anyone, Foyt was one of the best of all-time.

  • @saulocpp Everyone knows F1 driver's are the best. but A.J. Foyt went into races other than Indy/Cart... i believe he won the 24 Hour LeMans.... i'll double check that.

  • Offenhauser beats Lotus??? Offenhauser beats Ford and Watson beats Lotus

  • they were rear engined,

  • @goodboy6666 Fangio, Stewart, Clark, Brabham, Senna, Prost, would make him eat dirt. Why didn't the "best" compete in Formula 1? Because he doesn't know how to turn left and right in the same race? All they do is turn left all the way, man... Remember Nigel Mansell? He joined CART and won the championship in his 1st try. Where did he come from?

  • @Play3rsforlife

i dont believe you. no way.

  • There were still some front-engine cars (mostly Novis and Offy's) in 1964.

I think I once read that had Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald's cars both been rear-engine, they both would have survived that crash.

There were still a few front-engine cars in 1965 and 1966, but this accident accelerated the move to rear-engine cars.

BTW, Foyt's victory was the last for a front-engine car.

  • @saskabush2006 This was probably from a newsreel. A few newsreel companies were still around in 1964, serving those few movie theatres that still showed them with completed presentations. Some also provioded raw footage to TV news organizations.

  • @Play3rsforlife people don't care.
