DENVER, April 22 -- People with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) exhibit telltale signs of immune disruption up to a decade before they are diagnosed with the disease, a researcher said here. An abnormal pattern of so-called free light chains derived from immune proteins in the serum can be detected up to 9.8 years before symptoms of the disease appear, according to Neil Caporaso, M.D., of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md.
