Spyro Gyra (pronounced /ˌspaɪroʊˈdʒaɪrə/) is an American jazz fusion band that was originally formed in the mid-1970s in Buffalo, New York, USA. With over 25 albums released and 10 million copies sold, they are among the most prolific as well as commercially successful groups of the scene. Among their most successful hit singles are "Shaker Song" and "Morning Dance", which received significant play on popular music radio stations, and are still frequently heard nearly 30 years later on jazz and easy listening stations.
Their music, which has been influential in the development of smooth jazz, combines jazz with elements of R&B, funk and pop music. Although generally considered to be more "jazz" than "smooth", Spyro Gyra have been praised as skilled instrumentalists and for their live performances, which average nearly 100 per year.

  • When I was 6/7yo the local TV station used this song among others (Weather Report and Passport, etc.) as filler, that is in Punta Arenas, Chile. That give or take was thirty years ago. I remember thinking then that there was a certain "nostalgic" vibe to something 'bout this song. I hear it differently now for several reasons, but that "nostalgic" vibe remains, go figure. Great post, thank you uploader.

  • It looks like the album came out in late 1980 (after Catching The Sun). I knew it couldn't be later than early 1981, as this song was used to help advertise for a Dallas TV station while its' subscription service played at night.

  • @Tommy6860 I hear u. They had it goin on from the start and as time evolved they kinda fell off the wagon. However they did some good stuff that definitely put on the eternal map, like this one.

  • Uniquely cool.

  • One of my favorite Jazz groups of all time and I grew up on them.. Sadly, and in my opinion, after the release of Carnival, that was the last of the best from them. When John Tropea left the group (their lead guitarist) shortly after the Morning Dance album, then Jeremy Wall after the Carnival release, they weren't the same anymore. Still though, Jay Beckenstein is one of the greatest sax artist ever.

  • TIMELESS JAZZ TRACKS! THANKS FOR THE POST BOSWELL!

  • Thanks

  • @unholyimage Okay thanks again I just said the 80's because that is when I first heard this 80's classic.

  • @dal4018 I didn't really check the date, but I just looked at wiki and it said 1980. A lot of bands still had a strong disco hangover, and that says to me "70's". Anyway, the influence is definitely from the previous decade, and almost surly it was primarily written in the late 70's. But more importantly, to me personally, having grown up hearing music like this then in that time, I will always identify with it as such. Cheers to you and congratulations on your taste in music.

  • @unholyimage I thought this came out in the early 80's
