The reason the US is popular with the Iranian people is because they had a taste of financial success and freedom under the Shah who was put there by the US if I understand it correctly. Under the Shah, Iran flourished. If it wasn't for the fear of being killed for becoming an apostate, I think many, many Iranians would become Christians or at least turn away from Islam.
