November Song

In a November night
Under the kerosene lamp light
Around the clear flame of oaks in the open fire pit
We chatter and peel persimmons.
Tomorrow we wwill hang the naked fruits
under the eaves for drying by sun, wind and frost.
----Something running through darkness, Is that gushing wind or shower? * * *

The past is now.
Three hundred years ago
A Japanese potter named Kakiemon or Persimmon Jack
Tried so hard to catch the jewel light
Of persimmon in November sun,
Forgot to eat, to sleep, to talk.
Three years later he was able to bring out
The gorgeous color in his ceramics. * * *

The past is now.
Five years ago
An eighty one years old Japanese lady
Jumped into a nearby river
And finished her life under the November sky. ---Beyond the old lady's reach
There hung hundreds of flaming persimmon fruit
Backed by heavenly blue
In the dazzling sunshine. ---With her family and her friends
Sitting around the open firepit in November nights
She chattered and peered the fruits
All her life, for eighty one years.

---Now living by herself
She can make the dried fruits no more
She can present the sweet jewel to friends no more.
Missing the cheerful work
No pleasure to live off No treasure to share
The old lady sank into the cold river. * * *

Stomy November night.
Something running through darkness---
Is that gushing wind or shawer?
Around the fire pit we chatter and peel the fruites.

To chickadees, black bears and men
The tree offers cool shade in summer
Bittersweet cakes in autumn.
Botanists call the tree "Diospyros Kaki"　　　　　"The flame of God"
Very bitter in the beginning
Very sweet at the end.
Is this the food of life
Or the light of life?

今は昔　三百年前
九州　伊万里の陶工　柿右衛門は
太陽照り返す　柿の実に
まなこ眩み　心狂い
はたの眼には　デクノボー
色に憑かれた　三年の昼と夜
やがて　器に　柿の赤添えて
人の世に　光添える

人の世は　光　それとも　影
今は昔　五年前　昭和の頃
一人暮らし　八十一のおばあ
自ら沈み　姿消す　十一月　天竜の水

青たちかえる　秋の空
老いの手届かぬ　高みには
枝もたわわ　朱につぶらな　炎の実り　　　　　秋の夜なが　囲炉裏に座り
　　　柿の皮むく　八十一年
　　　舌に甘える　干柿作り　ままならず
　　　誰かにあげる　喜び消えて

喜び消えて　人の世は　光翳る
今はこれまで
八十一のおばあ　自ら沈み
姿消す　天竜の水　　　　　闇走る
　　　あれは　野分け　それとも　初しぐれ　　　　　ランプの下　コナラの炎

夏は　緑に陰すずしく
秋は　鳥　獣　また人間に
百　千の実り　惜しまず
冬ざれば　葉を捨て　陽射し　うらら
この木　学名　ディオスピロス　カキ

すなわち"神の炎"
初め　柿渋　しぶとく
今一度　太陽に思いを焦がし
白く　霜吹くまで　霜に熟し
ついに　甘く　うまくなる　　　　　こ　れ　は　　　　　命　の　糧　　　　　そ　れ　と　も　　　　　命　の　光
