I think the only profitable model for media moving forward will be streaming. Paying to "own" a piece of media is soon going to be an outdated concept and any company that clings exclusively to that model will disappear. We're already seeing the streaming model take shape: Spotify, Netflix, YouTube. People have no problem sitting through an ad or paying a reasonable subscription fee if it's the easiest way to access media they want to access.

@KixuFox and of course you might say, well we couldn't have talked to each other if not for our ISPs, but really, thats a whole different story altogether. The next big struggle for independence is from those telecom companies that profit massively and give so little. internet service today is no doubt, commercialized, but perhaps one day, surely not too far away, I dream of the time we, the people, will find a way to bypass all those money-eaters and have a truly free internet.

@KixuFox Well thats true, but the hallmark or capitalism over the last century (small group of people controlling large chunks of the economy) - thats changing now with the internet. and what is the internet anyway? its just a web of connections. you can call it the 'middleman', but really it doesn't do anything a 'middleman' would do - police/profit from the transactions. today, you and I are probably sitting in 2 different corners of the world but we can still talk, almost directly.

@pogobat and then there is always adblock. the day adblock comes under legislative barraging, thats the day they would have seriously pushed WAY TOO FAR.

I'm not going to be commenting on any madcap conspiracy theories.
i guess the optimum society would be something in-between a capitalist-based and socialist-based society. Karl Marx was right after all. With the coming of the internet, we are seeing more and more socialist trends where people are denouncing big corporations and achieving success on their own or in smaller groups. Technology and the internet has made the common man stronger and able to stand up for himself. The middle-man business model is fading away.

I'm not sure where Karl Marx fits into that. It still looks like straight-up capitalism to me. The internet has merely changed how capitalism plays out; capitalism is favoring different sorts of businesses now, and in a sense, there still is a middleman, he just isn't human — the internet IS the new middleman.
Inb4 skynet reference.

@KixuFox and if that happens, then it will be a totally different ball game of 'piracy'. this time is not pirating content, but pirating ISPs themselves. talk about - internet FOR the people BY the people!! :) w00t

Yeah, I guess I was referring to the ISPs.
I certainly think it's possible to bypass that bit. One day, one day...

1:28 ever heard of itunes?
btw why do you have a belt on your neck?

@TheGeordi
iTunes is great, but the content is still overpriced, and movies and shows bought there still have heavy DRM on them, which have to be removed if you want to have full control over them (which would breach the contract under which you purchased them).
If Apple goes under and has to shut down servers, any videos bought with iTunes will become inaccessible. In the long term, this is a real possibility which should be planned for.
