hmm....with the romero reference, I'd of leaned more toward Day of the Triffids. Which although about plants, is most credited for that kind of survival horror genre. Essentially, a movie like Night of the Living Dead, or 28 Days Later (this follows really closely right to starting out in a hospital) merely replaced the plants in the book with zombies. I suppose you could credit H.P. with that kind of zombie, but that leans more toward Frankenstein. good stuff any way. keep up the great work!
Jeffery Combs is synonymous with Lovecraft movies, but if you want a real treat check this out. Jeffery Combs recorded an audiobook of "The Re-Animator" the original story and breathes amazing life into the story. I can't recall the publishing studio but any fan of Lovecraft owes it to themselves to listen to a masterwork.
If the game is set in the 1800's, maybe the special items only work in warp zones because they are products of Dr. Chaos' bizarre experiments, and only work where the fabric of reality is at its weakest.

I actually have read some of the Lovecraftian stories, but only the ones linked to the Elder Gods and Chtulhu.

Perhaps I'm overthinking this, though. >.>
