'Grief isn't physical' but here in The Grief Order and its Five Commandments artist and filmmaker Nikolai Deaves adopts the Elizabeth Kubler-Ross model of denial, bargaining, anger and depression to step back into his grief. Here he creates and enacts varying performances based on his own personal experiences with loss, in order to give it a body, blood and life.
Grief is culturally expected to be boxed and buried with the deceased and the living to carry on with life, but with The Grief Order Nikolai Deaves establishes a new doctrine of living as a griever. In consideration to the absent cultural rituals of mourning in western society, the order and its commandments help the artist grapple melancholia's new tangible body and reach acceptance by reclaiming his own loss.
