The best train trip I've ever taken: the California Zephyr between Emeryville (in the SF Bay Area) and Chicago, Illinois. My wife and I rode it at the start of our Christmas holidays in 2011. The views were spectacular—especially around the Rockies and Sierras—and meditative, especially in the prairies of Iowa. Without exception the folk we met during meals were a pleasure to talk with. Our sleeper was spacious and comfortable, with a shower that was hot. Definitely a better way to travel than a plane.
