While much of the legislative focus is on health care right now on Capitol Hill, we're still tracking what can only be described as a significant threat to our personal liberties. It's called the Cyber Security Act - a measure still very much alive in Congress.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), is touted as necessary for national security. And while there are certainly sacrifices that must be made to protect our nation, this sweeping attempt to strip the rights of Americans goes far over that line.
Essentially, the Cyber Security Act would grant the federal government virtually complete control over all electronic communication. The President and his administrative bureaucracy would be permitted to shut down all electronic communications with no notice and for any number of vaguely defined reasons. The devastating potential of this action on commerce is frightening, and pales only when compared to the political suppression that this kind of authority could lead to.
However, it is absolutely essential that we stand up, take notice, and defeat this legislation. We continue to monitor the progress of this legislation. You can learn more about the dangers of this measure by listening to a recent interview as ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow discussed the measure with Sean Hannity. You can listen to that interview here.
We recently saw an effort like this in Iran when the Iranian citizens used Twitter to broadcast the real story of the post-election protests despite a media blackout enforced by the government of Iran. If Americans are stripped of the ability to use technology to communicate, our government might very well have the ability to stifle speech just as the Iranian government did. While we are all concerned about national security, we must not stand by while our elected officials use scare tactics to trample our rights and take away our fundamental freedoms.
