In the 1980s a company called Tonka began producing a toy line called Pound Puppies, soon the toys could be found in many department stores across North America. The Pound Puppies toys were a massive hit and soon inspired a TV series about them.

Ah the 80s.. when you could sell any toy by making a cartoon series about it (Teddy Ruxpin, Transformers, Care Bears, etc.)
