I am part of a group of students from Sonoma State University (in Northern California) who are traveling to New Orleans and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity during our Spring Break. These are some pictures I took while we were driving through Saint Bernard Parish on April 7, 2007, and they show how little of the area has been rebuilt since Hurricane Katrina.
I'm sorry about the blurry pictures, but I was shooting them through the window of a moving van. I'm not quite sure how to set my camera to take quick exposures in low-light conditions, but I'm working on it!

Music is "Shadowlands" by Amethystium.

  • You should credit the music in your video or in the info panel. People might want to know who it is.

  • The music is "Shadowlands" by Amethystium. I'll add it to the info panel.

  • i'm not seeing much of st. bernard... more like the 9th ward or other sections of new orleans.

  • We visited the Lower Ninth Ward a few days after I uploaded this video. It was hit even harder, and is still even more desolate, than what you see here.

Maybe this is not strictly Saint Bernard (I'm not an expert on the geography of the area), but it IS what I saw as we were driving from the New Orleans airport to our base camp in Saint Bernard.

  • Wow - this is the same day I was there with a group from Cal State Northridge (southern CA) for our spring break trip. I've posted a couple videos too. Isn't it horrifying??

  • Thanks. I also have photos of the Lower Ninth Ward, but I haven't yet made a slideshow of them (but I intend to when I have some time). Those were even more horrifying.

  • I also spent my spring break in the area with people from here (Ontario Canada) and i'm just amazed that conditions still look like this a YEAR later! I recognize some of these places and nothing is different. I wish St. Bernard Parish a quick recovery and look forward to going back this summer!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I think it is a good example of a drive thought the areas affected, from the airport to St. Bernard. It gives people a good idea of the SCOPE of destruction. Thanks again for your help in my hometown.

  • yeah most of it is not st. bernard... i'm from st. bernard... and the lower lying communities of st. bernard were hit way harder than the 9th ward. but you had to go deep deep south to see that. most of it in that video isn't the parish until over half way in it.
