Day dreaming as you do at the traffic lights, then out of nowhere... a rude awakening occured

I'm OK now after the headache, neck stiffness & eye sore (thanks for asking) but certainly gave me a fright of my life not knowing why I was flying out of my seat with only the seatbelt holding me back from hitting the steering wheel.

The van behind that hit me was the one responsible and I suspect a case of either falling asleep or texting on the mobile. I think the speed he was going at was about 40-50km/h without braking (note no skidding sound) given how hard it damaged my car front + rear & the innocent RAV in front of me.

I never found out why or what the guy was doing nor did I really cared. Main thing was that no person was injured after the incident.

Time: 7:52am 14/4/11
Location: Captain Cook Dr at the Carwarra Rd intersection Caringbah NSW

  • This is what I think of in my head when the guy in front of me leaves a space equivalent to the length of a football field

  • @MrMockeryMcFly If the football field is 2-3 metres long, then yes. For those that have commented about the length I stopped behind the RAV4, given the fisheye effect of the GoPro camera lens, distances will invariably be exaggerated than what it appears. The lens has an almost 180 degree viewing angle and was positioned in front of the centre rear view mirror as shown with the 2 A-pillars.

  • @SmellyT0fu dang that looks pretty bad how bad was the damage?

  • @volodymyrm1 Car wasn't written off and was fixed somewhat. Not sure what it costed to fix as the insurance company sorted that out but I'd say it was close to being written off.

  • He must have hit you hard to push you into the car in front, you had quite a lot of safety room there! I'm curious: where I live if you get rear ended and then hit the car in front, you are responsible for the damage to the car in front (in this case the RAV4). Is that true here?

  • @kyogre6444 No, the damages from the RAV would come from the car behind me. Obviously this video I sent to the driver of the RAV would rule me out as the cause of the accident but no, in Australia, I would not have paid the excess for the damage cause to the RAV, video or no video evidence.

  • @SmellyT0fu

What car were you driving at the time?

  • @volodymyrm1 was that near miranda near sydney?

  • Damn that was nasty! Clearly the driver that hit you was distracted. Glad you were ok!

  • I NEED A DOCTOR <3 LOVE DUBSTEP

  • @leedleleedle73 I too, drive a manual and I have to admit it gets annoying when people stop close to me on hills. But when people leave spaces so wide that they are holding traffic all the way back it starts to get annoying. As a general rule of thumb I stop up to the point where I can just see the car in front's rear wheels. I only roll back a few inches unless I'm on a steep incline where I use the e-brake. However, maybe the camera view in the video make the gap seem larger than it really is!

  • @MrMockeryMcFly But here's the thing you don't get. like most drivers in the united states, there is no where to go when stopped at a red light. I drive a manual transmission car and leave about 10 to 15 feet in-between me and the car in front of me. I hate when people get right up in my ass, its annoying.

  • @DualAnalogReviews The driver of the car behind him was trying to be an Enderman lol

  • GOD wat giving you a sine

  • I would get out and pretend i died on the ground haha

  • I can tell you the length of those stripes equivalent to the cars passing proves you 1 did leave enough space, not saying TOO much but 2 you could have got the brake down not to smash the next guy. I got plowed at a stop by a suburban doing 50mph, I know wtf I'm talking about. Don't get so "stunned" guy.
