This is Japanese archery on horseback known as Yabusame (流鏑馬). This was filmed in November 2009 at the Meiji Shrine, Japan. Yabusame was created as archery practice for the Samurai, to sharpen their skills during peace time. It is said by some historians that the warriors would also use dogs as target practice, called inuoumono and like Yabusame, the arrows were padded so few dogs were actually hurt. This video clip is taken from a full length film release planned for 2010, on the art of Japanese archery or Kyudo. • Just so you know, no war looks beautiful... Every country has done good and bad things. Don't say peoples race is bad or good. That's wrong. Individual people withen the race do bad or good things.

  • As awesome as always.

Empty Mind Films is becoming synonymous with very high standards and quality of film making.

  • @KosmoAntoninus

... My mistake, Guess the long bows just for show then not practicallity.

  • @ObsessedXP I was joking. The whole things seems ridiculous to me.

  • @KosmoAntoninus

... wouldn't that damage the bow?

Isn't that why they have swords...

  • @ObsessedXP The bows are long because if they can't hit the target with an arrow they can use the bow as a stick and knock the target down. It's only a couple meters away.

  • Lol those bows are way to long and impractical for hosrseback...

  • @TheBprideaux Different time, different people, different mindset. That was an age of fascism and super-nationalism and the warrior driving culture of Japan's Shogunate era wasn't so long ago (the Meiji restoration only occurred around the turn of the 20th century). Besides, all enemies are ugly in war.

  • @GuamKomudo Oh yea...how about the ART OF WAR?! Just kidding dude, of course war is ugly and disgusting. But there is an art to how war is waged.

  • I so want to be able to do this.

  • The predecessor of samurais were mounted archers. They used a laminated longbow and armed with a long curved sword known as tachi. Japanese mounted archers are among a few horse archers that used a longbow unlike most horse archers used a shorter, more compact recurved composite bow. The Ogasawara School maintains and preserved this ancient form martial art.
