Vostok 6, the final Vostok flight, was the first human spaceflight mission to carry a woman - cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova - into space. Her photographs of the horizon from space were later used to identify aerosol layers within the atmosphere. The mission, a joint flight with Vostok 5, was originally conceived as being a joint mission with two Vostoks each carrying a female cosmonaut, but this changed as the Vostok programme experienced cutbacks as a precursor to the retooling of the programme into the Voskhod programme.

The landing site was the Pavinskiy Collective Farm west of Bayevo in the Altai Region. After parachuting from the capsule, Tereshkova barely missed the lake because of strong winds.

The re-entry capsule is now on display at the RKK Energia Museum in Korolyov (near Moscow).

  • Americans had an advantage before Russian because German scientist and the designer of the rocket, Verner Fon Brown worked to the USA. I can't understand, why Americans have lost Space Race?

  • @lmf800 You are sounding desperate yourself now.

  • @lmf800 you are just one of dose dumb americans how can handle the communist succes.. america couldn't even put a tennisball into orbit wile the soviets had a dog up there are you really so stupid to think it was fake???

  • @SakuraHaruta But see the issue was...It was the Soviet Union. An unmanned capsule was sent up and was tracked, the rest was smoke and mirrors. An act of desperation to beat the Americans in 'putting a man in space'...

  • @lmf800 Gagarin's R7 rocket was tracked the second it left the launch pad, there is no way to fake radar and telemetry - and trust me, telemetry is very complex in its nature. Additionally Gagarin ran several experiments in space which were based on entirely new knowledge, and could not have been faked because there was no precursor to it. This included eating in space, alignment using stars and the horizon, and seeing if a human could even remain sane in micro-gravity.

  • The entire Soviet Space program was a sham...Sputnik was the only true mission, and Soviet Cosmonauts did not successfully go into space until 1968. This 'death' was to buy the deception a bit more time.Yuri Gregarin was a 'posterboy' who's 'flight' was done in a soundstage.
