I am sorry, there is no second movement.
At that time, she was in her teens.
However, this performance is wonderful.

Sayaka Shoji is soloist with the NHK Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit. Suntory Hall, Tokyo, 2002.

  • Her interpretation is far superior to anything I have heard in a long time. Dark and foreboding. And such wonderful bow control. Just the way I like to hear this piece played. Hilary Hahn makes it sound so sweet and sensuous. Not something that Stalin would ban.

  • So beautiful.

  • You mean she didn't play the secod movt in this performance? Intersting...

  • @rustypatch42 oh nvm shes not as young as i thought she was lol

  • @rustypatch42 don't you think darkness is a mature characteristic to put into your music? lol funny

  • Vengerov !!

  • Leave art and go become a rapper if all you can do is substitute the magic of artistic interpretation with your limited subjective experience.

No! red is better, no blue!, .Nothing is better than purple!! Turquoise is queen!

Insolent children fighting over who's crayon is "the best".

Brava ms.Shoji. I enjoy your rendition just as much as the Oistrakh version.

Two different versions, both speak to me in different ways. Hope to hear Batiashvili & Vengerov's versions soon!

  • Lisa Batiashvili's interpretation is much better, and her sound is unmatched, even by this young lady. It used to be on here, but it's not on here anymore :(

  • You can tell she can understand the darkness of the piece and what Shostakovich was going through at the time. Her bow is right on the bridge at 4:00. :o It sounds super loud, yet so emotional. Outstanding job.

  • noo..i like the second movement the best.

    still, simply an amazing performance

  • GAH! I am still coming back to this video! Countless time, I might add, her way of playing this piece just makes every other interpretation insufficient for me. Sorry to other loved performers on this piece.
