Here are some clips of the November 2010 Steam Gala days at Churnet Valley Railway and the re-opening of the Moorland City Railways Caulden Lowe branch line (or Calden Low depending which way you spell it!). Saturday 13th November saw the first public passenger service to run on the line since 1935 and the CVR was busier than it ever had been before in it's time as a preserved line. Lots of local people I spoke to said that they never thought they would see steam trains running in the Staffordshire moorlands again so it really was a special occasion which many people wanted to witness.
This video was made over two visits and I took the opportunity to film at some of the great moorland locations along the Caulden Lowe line, where there are some really good gradients to make the locos work hard for their money. As can be seen in the shots the weather was a mix of sunshine and fog!
Visiting steam locos were; 71000 Duke of Gloucester, 34028 SR West Country class 'Eddystone', 44767 Black 5 'George Stephenson' together with 8F 8624 and Large Prairie 5199 (which unfortunately failed on the saturday). Trains from Leekbrook Junction to Caulden Lowe were banked to help with the steep inclines, and because there is no runaround loop at the other end of the line. My personal favourite was Eddystone which sounded great working the inclines with it's off beat exhaust note, and apparently the crews were impressed with it too.
Nice one. Great to see the line to Caulden open again.
