I agree that Green Days version is pretty good too and actually they are the ones that got me into Operation Ivy when I heard them cover this in 94.But this version is the closest that you will ever get to the original.Aside from the Jesse doing it it basically is original but Lars did a great job.To say that Jesse has more heart singing is a little off.Without Lars we wouldn't have the great album And out come the Wolves.You have to remember that this isn't Lars song.

The original or not means nothing
Look at Bob Dylan' knocking on heaven's door version, the version of Guns N Roses is much better so stop sayin that the Rancid version is better because there is 2 menbers of Operation Ivy

@Bakerskater7890 of course not man, but i think lars does it better than billie joe armstrong lol. jesse is not as aggresive as before though, check "Common Rider" a band he had in the late 90s, sings a lil more calm, still great tho.
