the best version I've ever heard

That's actually a video up there, not a still image and some audio. It's just that his hands are moving so fast you can't tell :p

Before I came to Sydney in 1981, my best friend gave me a present. It was a record (風行?) he bought in 旺角新興 which I transferred into a tape for convenience. Yes, you guessed right. It was an LP of him playing. I never thought pipa could be played like that. The ambience & the distinctive crisp strokes are astounding, his artistry is supreme. It is one of my most cherished presents I've ever received. Viva Chinese Music! Our 非物質文化遺產 will thrive forever, esp. having Masters like 呂培原 contributing!

Immortal!

Listening to such "classic beauty" performance is beneficial for our heart and mind. Other explosive play of the 十面埋伏 simply stirs up the emotion. I still clearly remember how beautiful Master Lui's pipa sounded to my ears in one of those nights (in the 80s) when I sat next to him during the weekly 春雷 practice .

way more finesse than today's player. Timeless playing.

I agree with wingplum's comment. His background in guqin really shows in the way he styles his playing.

who has the live show version?

I don't think so, there's a quite a bit of technique and finesse in his play and interpretation. I like to think of it as what's appropriate and musical for the piece. His style is of experience and confidence.
On the other performances ,we see a lot of technique while here we have music.

His interpretation of this piece sure is the most musical I've heard. Here he doesn't show off his master-level techniques. Instead, he conveys the story from a different, and deeper, perspective.
