Through the Paola Town Co., Baptist Peoria first gave Paola the park in the town's square to be used as a gathering place. More than 150 years later, it still serves that purpose. One of Paola's founders, Peoria was a member of Peoria Indian tribe, though he also had Delaware Indian and French ancestry. He first settled in this area around 1834. When non-Indian settlers began to come into the area known as Peoria Village in the mid - to late-1800s, Peoria was generous to them, providing food and lodging for many. On Feb. 13, 1856, Peoria Village became the City of Paola, and has always been the county seat of Miami County. Today the park is the center of the downtown business district in Paola and is complete with a gazebo and a newly renovated colorful fountain.
