This event is remembered by every MetroStars fan who was there from the begining. Nicola Caricola scored an own goal with 15 seconds left on the clock to hand the NE Revolution a victory in the Metros home opener of their very first season. This was a harbinger of things to come.

The level of play in MLS is MUCH higher now. The teams were terrible in those first couple of years and could hardly string together a few passes in a row. Apart from a few big stars like Donadoni and Valderrama, it was a league of scrubs. Probably the only team from the inaugural season that could compete with today's teams is DC United, and even they would struggle.

The talent pool in 2007 is SO much deeper than it was back then. The league can afford to let the odd American player go to Europe because there are more than enough talented young players to take their place.

hr110391 - If I remember correctly, it was around 40-50,000. They closed off most of the upper deck for games.
I was sitting even with the 6-yard-box on the opposite side of this camera angle. The post was on my right, Tony Meola was sitting on his ass in front of me, Caricola was facing the post on my left, and for the rest of my life, that ball will flutter over Meola's head from left to right and into the net, thus making the Tri-state area pay for the sins of the Cosmos' excesses eternally.

Now wonder the Metrostars flopped. That was embarassing. The sad thing is alot of people left that game and have probably never been back.

awful jerseys----then again, the adoption of adverts like European clubs is a bad move as well.
