Sacred logs are being hauled hundreds of kilometres upriver to rebuild the Ise shrine.

The shrine has been at the centre of the Shinto faith for over 1,300 years. Believers think the spirit of the sun goddess lives there and that it's the spiritual home of the Japanese royal family.

  • I'm glad that they are keeping the tradition alive.

  • Absolutely incredible! I'm writing a small research paper on this process now, and it never ceases to amaze me just how big the lengths humans will go to to keep tradition. I'm so glad they uphold this tradition.

  • 500 million dollars, 10,000 trees every 20 years, and thousands of hours of hard labor? All for a myth? As someone outside looking in, this all seems like a waste to me. But I know I'd have a very different opinion if I was one of the people hauling those logs, so I'm going to shut up and let those people carry on their tradition. Besides, it's kinda neat.
