Charlotte Wagner of the Canine Paws Training Academy is teaching her Golden Retriever, Riley, how to accept a muzzle with the help of operant conditioning clicker training. This is a great way to introduce a muzzle and have your dog enjoy being around the object, and want to wear it. Using positive reinforcement and forming pleasant associations when wearing a muzzle also reduces the amount of stress a dog feels when confined by a muzzle.

  • This is very helpful. My dog just had surgery for eating toys and other things that he shouldn't. Need a muzzle to keep him safe at the dog park.

  • Hi guys! Thanks for all the lovely comments - I haven't checked this account (cwagner87) in a while as I have moved my training videos to a new Youtube account - Canine Paws Academy. Sorry for delaying my response but I will try to have a video up soon of Riley wearing the muzzle on leash and when playing with other dogs. He has trouble socialising with some dogs and not the best bite inhibition, so I definitely use the muzzle when he's off leash playing and socialising - and it's worked well!

  • Where's the golden?

  • Very cool. I like seeing the the dog concentrating on 'figuring it out'. I'd love to see the progression to having the dog wear the muzzle, and then eventually being able to walk with the muzzle on.

  • its easy to train dogs becaue they are stupid and gullable...contrary to what most people think.

  • Well done! This clearly shows the patience involved with clicker training.

I have saved your video to help my clients.

  • I have this on my play list and recommend it to my clients that need to use a muzzle. Thank you for posting.

  • i love this video! i'm also going on vacation next year to a country where pitbulls mixes need to be muzzled and maybe german shepard too so this is really helpful thank you =)

  • THanks for sharing. My malamute is aggressive towards other dogs, so I want to muzzle him on walks only. My dog allows me to put his muzzle on with absolutely no problems. But when its on he tries to take it off with his paws. I guess he has to get used to it. It has only been two days since I got the muzzle.
