I finally got it running again after putting new spark plugs in it again, but it's idling like this now. It either does this, or it idles rough and makes the car shake. I've replaces the IAC valve, and the TPS. Also, when it idles kind of normally without bouncing back and fourth, the rps go up to about 4g's when I barely touch the gas. I know nothing is binding with the cable, and that made me change the TPS, even though there were no jumps in resistance when I tried to test it. The throttle also seems to stick even when I barely press it, and again, the cable isn't binding or anything, and the throttle body is clean. I've checked for vacuum leaks, and I haven't found any. Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks

  • I am having the exact same problem, I have a vacuum line off but cannot find the location for it any idea where i could get this info? I can not fine it in the haynes manual

  • @glitterhalo87 What I've heard is a good way to find a vacuum leak or whatever is to use a length of fuel hose or something similar and hold one end to your ear, and move the other end in the suspected area. Another way would be to spray carb/throttle body cleaner around where vacuum connections are made and things like that. When you spray the cleaner, and notice a drop in rpm's, there is a leak. Hope this helps. I think my problem was vacuum leaks and a bad throttle position sensor.

  • I figured it out eventually. I had gotten the wrong throttle position sensor. I put the old one back on, and it was better. Than I found several vacuum leaks and fixed them. It's running good now. I'll have to put a video of it on now. Thanks for all the tips.

  • my best and only thoughts would be a its a fuel problem. Bad connection to an injector, or maybe a bad injector itself. I had a 91 fbird that had a bad all-be-it, brand new injector(thank you autozone) that had a small crack in it barely even noticeable that caused the car to idle at 4k. So I am thinking you could have some sort of pulsing fuel leak. But again, not a mechanic, but I do try. Hope this helps some how.

  • @banecker1 Thanks for the tip! I'll have to look into that. Also, when I barely press the throttle, it goes way up to 3 or 4k. Do you think that could cause that too?

  • haha that is the weirdest thing ive ever seen. its revving the engine like that just by idling?

  • @MyHairBear I know!!! lol. I had to put this on youtube because I can't find it quite like this anywhere else. Yep...it's doing that all by itself... I dunno why it would be that extreme.

  • The tps needs to be set to .54 dc volts. And set your iac by turning the key to the on position then unplugging the iac then turn your key off and plug it back in. Hope this helps

  • my stupid cutlass ciera 3.1 does almost the same thing at idle. It lopes like it has a supercharger on it,but when you tap the gas, it goes away.

  • Damn, that's one hell of a hunting idle!

I have something similar to that on my 2.8 fiero, but it only hunts between something like 600-1200rpm, nothing as wild as this. I don't know any answers, but it seems to be a common problem many people struggle with, but yours is quite an extreme case.

  • vacuum leak!!!! upper plenum. very common!!

  • VACUUM LEAK. Or thats my best reasoning after watching both vids. Im not sure but if there is a MAP sensor I'd say that it is your problem. my $.02

  • Your description says that you have new plugs in it.. are you new plugs already showing signs of carbon build up? how is your oil? those are usually pretty good indicators of fuel problems. You could always just go to a good ole boys garage and get the random chevy 350 sittin in the corner and dump it in there.. lol
