But results are only preliminary, researchers caution.

Human embryonic stem cells have been coaxed into forming sperm-like cells, researchers report today1. The cells have some of the hallmarks of sperm — they can swim, for example — but require much more characterization before they can be embraced as an experimental model for the study of inherited diseases and infertility.

BREAKTHROUGH ON INFERTILITY

Scientists are close to creating egg and sperm cells

INFERTILE men and women could still become parents after scientists took the first step towards making sperm and eggs in the lab.
A study published in Nature magazine reveals that they have worked out what mixture of chemicals is needed to turn stem cells into immature sperm and egg cells, known as germ cells.
Some of the male germ cells developed as far as producing tails and experts believe they could have fertilised an egg.
The team hopes that creating these early sex cells will help them to study and understand what goes wrong in people who are infertile. Fertility expert Dr Allan Pacey of Sheffield University said: This may help us find a cure for male infertility. Its a long way off, but its a laudable dream.

Sperm, Egg Precursors Made From Stem Cells May Help Infertility

Oct. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Stem cells were changed to form the precursors of sperm and eggs in a research advance that may lead to better ways of treating the infertility affecting 10 to 15 percent of would-be parents in the U.S.

By manipulating genes, researchers were able to make germ cells, the forerunners of eggs and sperm, said Renee Reijo Pera, the Stanford University scientist who led a study published today in the journal Nature.

Infertility rarely occurs in animals besides humans, so using laboratory mice or other mammals to study the condition and test drugs isnt useful, Reijo Pera said. The newly created germ cells can now be scrutinized to find what goes wrong in infertile people, Reijo Pera said.

We now have a human system to examine germ cell development, Reijo Pera said in a telephone interview on Oct. 26. Weve never been able to do this before, never been able to look at the genes required to make human germ cells.
