Belgian pianist Charles Loos is an artist who needs little introduction. His many musical collaborations and projects have led him to play all over the world with such renowned artists as Steve Houben, Toots Thielemans, Chet Baker, Philip Catherine, Johnny Griffin, Maurane and Art Farmer.
Charles particularly likes to play with singers, including as well as Maurane - Chantal Willie, Deborah Brown and the late and much regretted Anca Parghel.
For the past year, Charles has been collaborating with Belgian singer and actress Julie Jaroszewski. Julie has been passionately interested in jazz since she was a child. At the age of 26, she has already absorbed many influences from different cultures in her singing, notably those evolving from the musical traditions of West and North Africa, and Southern Spain.
This quartet is born out of the meeting between Charles and Julie.
Their different journeys have brought them together with Rui Salgado and Toon Van Dionant, based in Brussels, and united around a common love of jazz and its standards. The quartet has met with an exceptional reception among audiences in Belgium and Spain, and has received outstanding reviews in the press.
We could cite, for example, radio presenter Philippe Baron of Belgian state media network, RTBF. In his Jazz show on Musiq3, Philippe has described himself as « very enthusiastic » about the quartet and about the work of Julie Jaroszewski, a singer whom he finds « really very, very, very interesting » and who he says has « an extraordinary confidence » and « a big personality ». Likewise, in his blog Jazzques, music critic Jacques Prouvost has the following to say:
« Julie really never does anything like other people, and so much the better. Julies is a distinctive voice within our Belgian jazz. And not just in the sense of a « simple » singers voice I have said it before, and I repeat it now : I persist and I affirm that this girl has one hell of a personality. She is also bloody ballsy [she] reminds me of Ursula Rucker Julie has an amazing presence and ease on stage Brilliant! »
In the quartet with Charles Loos, Rui Salgado, and Toon Van Dionant, the jazz standard is used as a meeting point and springboard, a space open to digressions and variations. The group sketches soundscapes that are enriched by the different trajectories and life experiences of each of its members.
These four paths meet on stage and in the music, and the encounter is rendered audible and visible during the time and space of a concert. The results are spontaneous, colourful, passionate, often surprising, and always unique.
