  • I hope that perhaps you can find a complete tape of NBC's (as well as ABc's and CBS's) original broadcast of the Friendship 7 mission.

I'd love to see how the networks covered one of the major milestones in early space exploration.

BTW, this edited version of the broadcast, as shown on MSNBC's "Time and Again", was broadcast in October of 1998, prior to his return to space on the shuttle.

  • @altfactor Your correct this broadcast is actually apart of my John Glenn returns to space collection.

All of that is here on my channel. I may upload the rest of the show. but other than Gus's 1st flight this is the only other TV coverage I have pre Gemini 6 &7.

  • Thank you again Zellco!

  • @rollprogramhouston Thank you again for watching!

  • Thanks for posting this zellco. As always, your channel has the best "as broadcast" stuff which is much appreciated by space nuts like myself.

  • @rjcpacker Thank you so much!! This is the closest to the actual live coverage I can find.

I just thought about uploading it last night for The 49th anniversary of this historic flight.

  • I was in the second grade the day john glenn went into obit. the teachers took all the kids from kindergarden to sixth grade to the school gym. a small 19 inch tv on a stand was sit up so everyone could watch the historic event. john glenn became as big a hero to kids as roy rogers! I remember it like yesterday.

  • Jane Pauley...? ughhhh, fingernails on the chalk board... Godspeed, John Glenn, 50 years ago today.. everything in the store window, live for all to see.... unlike the Russians..

  • Just over seven short years later we landed a men on the moon. If America could stop her division and put her mind to it we could do anything!

  • Really appreciate all these great news coverage videos that you post...AWESOME and thank you!!

  • Wishing a very happy 88th birthday to John Glenn!

  • NBC's Roy Neal didn't yell "Go, Baby, Go!" like Walter Cronkite of CBS did, but it's still nice to see some NBC footage of John Glenn's Mercury flight, since most of the retrospectives of Friendship 7 using TV footage inevitably use a kinescope of CBS's broadcast.

  • @GaryW48 Jay Barbree anchored MSNBC's live broadcast of the shuttle Discovery;'s final launch on February 24, 2011.

I would think that NBC's broadcast network will carry the final shuttle launch live later this year (2011); I think NBC should have Barbree anchor the coverage on it's primary over-the-air network instead of MSNBC. He deserves it after all the years he's spent covering space.

Besides, NBC should send Brian Williams to Mission Control during the launch.

  • Brilliant ! Thanks ever so much - again zellco321 !
