[Four] It's astoundingly beautiful, it's draped in meaning, I could talk for hours about the homophones "mourning" and "morning" dress... Who the hell writes like that? That's fucking amazing.

[Three] To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

Do you understand what that means? It means people who preach are full of shit, and the real good ones are simply helping the needy without asking for recognition. Sufjan get's this, because that's not just what religion is about, it's the essence of altruism itself, and that is at the heart of the New Testament.

[Two] he's also going to ruin your surviving family, because if you know anything about Bronze age Jews, it's that widows and fatherless were basically social pariahs comparable to lepers, no one wants to deal with a dead man's family.

What's interesting is that there's only one reference to the widows and fatherless in the New Testament, in James 1:27... "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this...

[One] As I listen to this, I'd like to briefly explain what Sufjan is singing about.

It's very easy to interpret this song as being from the perspective of Jesus Christ, sure, it isn't hard to find Jesus in Sufjan's music, but that's a shallow take on the song.

There are quite a few references to the widows and the fatherless in the bible, Sufjan is well aware of them. Almost all of them are in the Old Testament, and it's usually about how when God kills you...
