Aegis BMD (FTM-12) Stellar Athena Quicklook

Narrative on the first successful intercept of a ballistic missile by a U.S. destroyer. The USS Decatur (DDG 73) successfully detected and tracked a medium range, separating target launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) with the Aegis BMD 3.6 weapon system, firing the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Blk IA missile for an intercept in the midcource phase of the target's flight. Additional participants in the test included the Aegis cruiser USS Port Royal (CG-73), the Spanish frigate Mendez Nunez (F-104) and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) mobile gorund based radar.

This was the third successful intercept of a separating target and the ninth intercept out of eleven BMD firing events. This also marked the third time an allied military unit participated in a U.S. Aegis BMD test, with warships from Japan and the Netherlands participating in earlier tests.
