I find myself inspired by so many young drummers half my age as I return to the drums after 24 years away.

The likes of Cobus Potgieter and Scott Prian have skills way beyond their years and mine!

I was also drawn to the fact that Scott was playing the kit that I had ordered, a Gretsch Renown in Autumn Burst, so this video is made with thanks to the young pretenders.

This is only my 4th time on an acoustic kit since 1985 and was my first time on this kit.

Configured into a new kit set up, this rehearsal is merely me exploring the new kit and it's sounds.

Different heads are in use, both Remo and Evans and both coated and clear, this was to allow me to hear the tonal ranges before I settled on one set.

I concluded that I would in fact have two sets for different styles of music!

It was filmed in this very basic form from my DSLR camera, so the quality, especially the sound, is not wonderful, so apologies for that.

It also limited me to just 5 minutes of film per shoot, so please see the other videos from this session.

Hopefully this video signals another small step forward on my own return to playing.

One thing is for sure, I love the Gretsch Renown kit and the combination of cymbals and twin snares is a joy to play.

Thanks for watching Part 1.

  • you can't bring a good man down even after 24 years...

I've been stuck with guitar in a while now but after seeing this I might hit my kit again.

  • Thanks for your kind words, hope you do pick the sticks up again!

  • I see you have your other tom on a cymbal clamp, is it a cymbal clamp, what is the name of the claw or whatever that you use to have to tom on your cymbal stand!? I want it for my kit when it gets here, I hate my toms now, and the set i have, but either way, what is it?

  • I like the shadow

Odd, I don't often listen to rush, so I checked it out - but the hats are very different?

I wish I could play like Neil though!

  • Just played one of these at the guitar center drum off fantastic kit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it sounds great!

  • I hear that you have some overtone coming out of the snare. I would love to point you in the direction of the drum wallet. Amazing product. Takes out all overtone from the batter head. If you have any questions about it feel free to ask me, I have one.
