I do not profess to be a B3 player - I'm still workin' on that left hand bass thing (you'll hear a few stumbles in this post). Nonetheless, every once in a while I like to put the B3 patch on and have some fun. Unfortunately, it's not all that easy playing a B3 patch on the weighted-action of the Roland FP-4, but it will have to do for now.

I have "beefed-up" the internal Roland FP-4 organ patch #1 by adding a touch of the VSTi Organized (check it out here: http://freemusicsoftware.org/467). This is a really nice VSTi and I like the way I can add overdrive to it. I also added a hint of ReaSynth VSTi that comes with the program Reaper to the left hand to give a little more bottom to the bass.

I am playing to a drum loop created in Band-in-a-Box and using the chord progression from the tune "Sunny". I love the key of C Minor as you can probably tell by my heavy use of the C Minor pentatonic scale. There are a couple of other nice versions of this tune on YT and I drew inspiration from them, especially the nice effort by Robbie Benson and of course the killer version with Pat Martino, John Scofield and the great Joey D on the B3!

Once again I owe a HUGE THANKS to Jamal at http://www.midikeys.com for providing the awesome MIDIKeyz software that shows the notes as I play them using the on-screen keyboard.

A Midi file and PDF notation file of my solo and the drum loop backing track are all available on my website at

Thanks for listening!

  • Those are some sexy behind-the-beat sixteenths, my man! I also love the free, outside minor seventh arpeggios. This reminds me of Tom Coster's best stuff. Keep 'em coming~

  • @Modes9 Thanks Eric, Tom Coster is great!

  • very nice, thanks for posting

  • @PooPooOnMyNewShoe I appreciate your comment, thanks.

  • Ahh, the old pentatonic scale. haha You're conversing with a self-taught organist. Isn't the Pentatonic scale basically 6th chords? As in the key of C, for example, the scale would be C E G A C? Am I even close?

A side note: You mention having worked with a Marty Greenburg. I live in Toledo and know a Marty Greenburg quite well. He's an electronics technician here in town and also a very fine bassist; there can't be two, can there? Just curious.

  • @bnelson218 As for the pentatonic scale, you're close. There are Major and Minor pentatonics. In this I use a lot of C Minor pentatonic which is C-Eb-F-G-Bb.

As for Marty - one in the same. ;-)

  • Great To Hear Keyboard Music.

  • I can't even play this well on my Korg CX-3 (organ), let alone a keyboard with weighted keys like yours. wow, very well done sir.

  • @bnelson218 Playing a pentatonic scale outside of the tonal key. For example plating an E Major pentatonic when the tonal center is Bb Major.
