This song by Giorgio Gaber (2003) is in the last album published after Gaber's death on Jan 1, 2003.
It is in some sense the opposite of L'italiano by Toto Cutugno (aka lasciatemi cantare or L'italiano vero).
In Cutugno's song commonplaces and stereotypes are taken seriously: eating "spaghetti al dente", watching soccer games again and again (discussing them through "moviola"), playing guitar, etc. are the features that characterize Italians. That song is nationalistic and sappy, expression of Italy's middle class...
Gaber's song, on the other hand, expresses the disorientationand uneasiness of the singer, who is uncomfortable -as an Italian- with his country, because 1) it is wrecked; 2) because our politicians wrangle over in the Congress and nothing is going to change; 3) because the rest of the world still considers us as the "spaghetti and mandolino" guys who eat and sing the whole day; etc.. The singer is uncertain whether being happy or unhappy for being Italian and he is addressing the President (Azeglio Ciampi at that time) directly to give vent to his uneasiness and discomfort: since we have made the EU (European Union), why don't we try to make Italy?

This song is perfect for a third semester course of Italian as a Foreign Lnguage, especially for Americans, who tend to have the stereotyped idea of Italy as it is represented in Cutugno's song!
The lyrics are full of subjunctives (present) following verbs of opinion, doubt, hope, etc.
The song also contains useful vocabulary and it is a powerful tool for introducing notions of cultural identity and stereotypes about Italy.

  • perchè scrivete karaoke?

  • @liberopensieroberto

  • "ATTUALISSIMO"

  • Concordo appieno.

  • complimenti Rita, voto :)

  • Grazie, Marcellino!
