A combination of two live performances of The Smiths, together with commentary from a friend of Morrissey, Morrissey himself and John Peel

Friend of Morrissey - And a lot people totally misinterpret, totally, totally, whatever he says, and the things he does, people they choose to see yes The Smiths being very morbid and maudlin, very northern and gloomy. And yet they're not, lots of Johnny's guitar playing is very jubilant and very celebratory...it's really uplifting

Morrissey - On the very brief spasms of employment that I had in the past it always seemed to me there were moments of the day when I would realize that I was here working with these people that I despise and I have to talk to these horrible people and ask them what they did yesterday and I would have to report to a boss that I couldn't stand...

Morrissey - And when your in that position which was the absolute basis of "Heaven knows I'm miserable now" you realize that your actually spending your entire life living with people that you do not like, and doing something that you do not like... which is incredibly distressing. So that was the basis of that song

Morrissey - "Kick in the eye" yes literally sometimes... lets by perfectly honest. Sometimes we do get so angry with people...were not averse to violence which is of course a terrible thing to say but true none the less

John Peel - I mean on more than one occasion I've actually laughed out loud at Smiths lyrics, and I don't often do that, I don't often laugh out loud at anything very much. I think that they're very funny lyrics and I cannot understand why people assume that what they do is essentially miserable. I suppose because there a lot of references to kind of death and pain and so forth in the lyrics but again its done in the same sort of way as like books like the loved one, you know were it's sort of ironic and... I don't see them as being miserable at all, I get rather cross when people tell me that they are

  • The Smiths are indeed hideously mistaken for a miserable band. So many people who mistake Morrissey for a humourless sad bastard. He IS rather fed up with the world BUT he knows this is an absurd situation to start from. So he constantly swings between sadness and irony about his own sadness and about people who are too goddamn dull to read between the lines and see the humour in all of it. (Lets sing this to a happy guitar tune and see if they take this serious:oh god they actually do.how sad.)

  • Though I am not from the 80's this band is really really cool. He has this.. unique voice.

  • one of the best band ever and morrissey became a god but it's unforgetable band forever in our lives

  • this a mix of vid clips from south bank show.an excellant mix....im 42 and my own personal opinion thinks that johnny marr deserves more recognition to the smiths music, they would not have been "the smiths" without him.they are all legends.............. i have 1 thing to say to anti-smiths fans,if yer dont like it..............dont listen ...........but listen to that guitar man.....

  • Morrissey is such a brilliant and talented artist, and it is no lie that he can be easily and heavily misunderstood..which if i am perfectly honest, adds to the spirit that is morrissey - and if you disagree with me or any other fan of the smiths, then why are you even here? Also nice editing of the Video :)

  • too bad the signer became a total alcoholic and tried to make a comeback, but what a disaster on craig fergurson show
