On October 1, WTXF Fox 29 began using new opens and transitions for its 10pm newscast. This covers only the opens and transitions on the 10pm; all other graphics remain as before, and all other newscasts are still using the existing opens. As you can imagine, it clashes a little bit.

This open also features new hire Lauren Cohn, who joined the station a few weeks ago presumably to replace the departing Kerri-Lee Halkett. Cohn is on the road presenting the flood coverage while Thomas Drayton is at home. Amazingly, Drayton's presenting part of the sports tonight before throwing to a pre-taped interview segment.

Over the last few months, WTXF has moved away from a traditional newscast to one that heavily features interviews, analysis, and opinion. Politics and issue-based stories receive much more in-depth coverage than before, and local pundits frequently stop by the studio for interviews. Some of it I like, some of it I hate, but you have to give them credit for trying something different.

The new format suggests cable, and that's backed up by the news ticker that's now present on every newscast.

  • More like FOX cuts across the board. Sure, they can get people to come by, but live coverage and more resources covering breaking news will have to beat out everything. This format change just masks it. I do believe Tristan Bresnen, not WTVT's hub, made the graphic edits and these are even more rogue and fresh than his interpretation of the FOX HD O&O GFX. The theme is also cool. But yeah, other than aesthetic refreshes, yeah, format? Nych. WFXT in Boston has been suffering BADLY from all this.

  • @hkfreak No, I've confirmed it's the Tampa hub. Tampa actually doesn't do a bad job with the graphical look of the stations, although I would prefer full graphics departments.

  • @hkfreak Hmmm so this is an *OFFICIAL* new open across the board. Nice. Also digging the new theme...for lack of a better term, more indie-bandish :-*

  • @hkfreak New open looks much better than what they had, but still rather 2D. At least this one looks acceptable for an O&O. How did 'TXF get Tampa to do a special open just for them?

  • @HulkieG Yeah, I just saw Tampa's interpretation. Not bad at all, and they still have Big Don's voiceover.

  • WFLD has been suffering as well. Only difference is during the 9pm "newscast", they use strictly production music.
