  • @CAMNZ117 the fittings and the masts alone r worth hundreds if not thousands--they r aluminum...and stainless steel- there r probably engines too- that can be recycled..

  • @CAMNZ117

Since I wrote that, I did some thinking.

If the former owners couldn't afford the loan payments - job loss, foreclosure, bankruptcy - they wouldn't have legal title to the boats, so they couldn't sell them.

The various banks and finance companies probably have their hands full with bigger properties, like real estate, and couldn't be bothered dealing with (now worthless) boats, often with multiple liens on them, so they just take the write-off.

  • you could make a business out of taking these boats, cleaning them up and then selling them. i love how instead of salvaging that sunk yacht, they just stuck a buoy there instead :/

  • @skeilak agreed.

  • I'm guessing that it's just the state of the economy that causes people to anchor their rather expensive boat, one day, and just say, "To heck with it.", and never come back.

Still. you have to wonder, why not just put an add in CraigsList, for "25ft. sailboat, cheap, make offer.", and put a couple grand in your pocket? The one at 00:17 is (was) a damn nice boat, and looks like she would've fetched an easy $10K, before they left her to the weather.

  • @scottieman2 Apparently it is okay. I think its pretty messed up but I don't think they should be held responsible for some one else crashing into it. That's like saying like saying its the garbage company's fault if you run your car into there trash can. In the end what this amounts to is littering. Not really dangerous in short terms but I suppose it could be argued that its environmentally dangerous in the long term.

  • @Pooshooter5k But it's okay for who ever that left the abandoned boat and let it float around they shouldn't get in arrested or anything?

  • @scottieman2 But that's your responsibility. If you can't avoid these it means that you are dangerous not them. The pilot is responsible for his craft. If he crashes into an unpowered piece of debris floating free how can that be anyone's fault but his?

  • @Pooshooter5k I can crash into something and hurt someone.

  • @scottieman2 Why would it be dangerous if no one is on it?
