They say that in a nuclear holocost only cockroaches will survive the radiation.
... and that they will mutate by absorbing the tonsorial characteristics of the humans in closest proximity to them. This means that if there is a nuclear holocost in North Carolina this week, there will be a cockroach in Denlin's old house that looks like a slestack with a beard!
(I made up that last part.) ;-)
