Reason.tv attended the Students For Liberty International Conference 2011 at the George Washington University in Washington, February 18th to the 20th.
Students For Liberty is a nonprofit organization geared toward aiding libertarian student groups on campus and abroad. Formed in 2008, SFL has grown from thirty students to over 500 and begun to gain the media attention of Fox Business Network and Stossel. Reason.tv sat down with Co-founders Alexander McCobin and Sloane Frost, Executive Board Member Ankur Chawla, Communication Manager Blayne Bennett and SFL Student of the Year 2011 Michelle Fields to talk about the organization's exceptional growth and if it is connected to a increased interest in libertarianism in the general public. Reason.tv also interviewed the students attending about why they are libertarian and what they hoped to take away from the conference.
Approximately 3 minutes long. Shot and edited by Josh Swain. Interviews by Swain with assistance from Reason Foundation research assistant Harris Kenny and Communication Specialist Katie Hooks.

@zyodei "we are all interconnected" In what way? Explain this connection in detail as well as how this obligates me to surrender the results of my productive efforts to others. "each person owes something to all the other people who benefit you" Please identify these people who are benefiting me.

@justiceforwomyn P.S. Who is lambasting Obama for helping Japan? Most real libertarians are waaaaayyyyy more interested in Obama wasting money on wars, on bailing our corporations and big banks, on laws that screw the little guy, etc. etc.
But there is an important lesson to learn here: The government HAS no resources. The government has NOTHING, except what it takes or has taken by force from the people.
Why the middle man? Why not just encourage the people themselves to aid Japan?

@Huboons Yes, there is a great value in looking out for your own self and interests.
But you can't ignore the fact that we are all interconnected, and each person in society sinks or swims to some extent on the well-being of others.
In fact, this is simply an extension of self-preservation - looking out for others.
I don't enforce any sort of action to ENFORCE this responsibility. But it's simply myopic to deny that each person owes something to all the other people who benefit you.

@justiceforwomyn you left out the tiny detail that institutional slavery can only exist with a government backing it. oh, and btw, Fuck you.

@zyodei "We all have a moral responsibility to help our fellow human beings in many ways." I have no responsibility to anyone other than myself, and holding my own life as my highest value benefits others as a byproduct by not demanding they sacrifice themselves for my benefit.

It's not about being selfish. We are all deeply interconnected. We all have a moral responsibility to help our fellow human beings in many ways.
It's just a matter of coercion. THAT'S what libertarians hate. The idea that any body can FORCE, at the implicit threat of violence, people to help other people is morally bankrupt. Help is meaningless unless it's voluntary, from the heart.
P.S. Government is a net promoter of racism etc. - ie apartheid drug war, housing policies, etc.
