Cultural and educational TV/Video project

We have discussed the cultural and educational TV/Video project of Ghana on the phone and I promised to send you some ideas which you can find below now.

1. We would like to teach about the culture of northern part of Ghana where I come from. My tribe is called Dagomba and we have a lot of interesting cultural elements. For example: my tribe´s musical instruments that we would like to introduce to Finnish people and students. In the video we could show how to build these instruments and also to teach and show how to play them.

But building and playing these instruments is only one part of the programme. The idea is to promote awereness of Ghanan cultures in a broader way. We would tell the stories about Dagomba- traditions, ceremonies, dances, values and so on to give some understanding about the Dagomba way of life.

2. Then, we would like to make a video about the African ways of recycling (how to recycle in Africa) and use that as an educational video at Ghana (we want share that information there). In addition, we could also make an educational video for immigrants here in Finland how the recycling works in Finland and how to recycle. This kind of video could be shown in the schools in Finland where immigration traning and Finnish is as a second language education is being educated. In addition, we could show how to make jewellery from recycled materials as a lighter part of the video.

The reason I wish to teach my culture here in Finland is because I have a mixed family and a daughter who knows both Finnish and Dagomba cultures and I know how important is to understand each others culture. I have lived in Finland for seven years now. During this time I have also attended many courses which have helped me to understand Finnish culture and live here in Helsinki and Finland.

Earlier, I have been doing workshops since 2003 for institutions like Kulttuurikeskus Caisa and Kassandra. In these workshops I am working on behalf of the organisation TOYA-Finland, which is the Finnish branch of the ghanian non-governmental organisation TOYA-Ghana, which is located in northern part of Ghana. Before moving to Finland I was very much involved in this organisation´s work to promote social development in the rural areas. The TOYA-Ghana does many things. The organisation works to promote organic farming for better food production. Also, TOYA-Ghana works with disadvantaged groups like widows and orphans, providing social services, donatating school uniforms and teaching the people about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS.

All these activities are very depended on foreign aid, so the main goal for TOYA-Finland is to promote the work of TOYA-Ghana in order to get donations and support for this work for Africa.

For this purpose, we would like to make cultural and educational videos and share the knowledge with people about the Ghanan culture. We do have necessary video equipments for this (a Sony DVCam model DSR-250P), but we need help editing of our videos (adding text, etc). and finance support for doing these educational and cultural videos. About recycling we also need some specialist to help for making this part.

In addition, we would also hope that you could show these finalized videos in the Finnish national TV as an cultural programme. We also wish that we could use these videos as educational purposes in Finnish institutes for Finnish and also for immigrants. About the recycling video in Africa, we would promote that in Ghana.

I am looking forward to your positive reply.

Yours sincerely,
