After all---Irish, Scot, Welsh...The people are descended from the Celtic tribes of the British Isles.
Before being overrun by Saxons, Vikings and Normans the people of Britain were also Celts. Earlier the Romans had ruled the island of Britain; but they didn't populate it.
Boudicca was the queen of the Brittonic Iceni (tribe) who staged a rebellion against Roman rule. Needless to say, she paid the price!
Other Celtic areas = Isle of Man, Cornwall (in GB) Brittany, France.

The original tune is the "The Bonnie Banks of Lochlomond"--1746.
It is thought to be a lament about the Highland Celts (Scots) who lost the battle of Culloden against the British.
Many Irish joined in the battle to support their fellow Celts and the Catholic claim to the United Kingdom throne by Bonnie Prince Charlie.
In Ireland, at the Battle of the Boyne (1690)
James II (VII), (a Catholic) was defeated by William of Orange, the Dutch Protestant who had been made king of the UK..

Its neither a Scottish or Irish air but Canadian but sure who cares its a gorgeous piece.
-
Classy version - Even though this is from a Scottish air it feels more Irish than anything. Irish and proud.

We also have the Lily of the Valley and we use it also for funerals. Such things are unbearable.

I was born and raised in Dunkirk. I moved away in 1984, when I was 19. I had forgotten just how beautiful the sunsets were. Thanks for the memories. I just might I have to take a trip up there to see it once again.
