    The guy is playing a wise horseman, who knows that the horse is suffering (collapses and is gasping air) and will probably die a miserable death. The phrase "Put him out of his misery" is moral here. Cogburn has used a very useful and dedicated instrument to save the girl's life. Now that the horse is gone, he, using his own legs, has to come through for her. The drama is heightened.

    I've seen many John Wayne movies and I liked his acting in most of them. I did not see "True Grit" with him. I did see the 2010 version of "True Grit" and really like it. If the 1969 version comes up to the 2010 version, I'll probably like it too.

    Spoiler.. sorta. Just came to say that the part where he killed the horse after he stabbed and rode it to exhaustion 'til it collapsed totally ruined the movie for me. Like, wtf.. the bitch was tired - give it a break. Such a terrible death. Anyway..
