If he did a dair, they would both die. If he did the fair properly, he would push PC away and then be able to recover, like Jejune said.
For starters, he shouldn't have grabbed at 0:23 to start that whole sequence anyway, since PC was facing away from the ledge. He should have stood a little back, tipper if PC landed, and just let him be if PC fell past the stage.
But yeah, once he started it, fair would have been the right move. M2k does it successfully all the time, and it looks badass.

he was probably trying to drop down and fair him away from the edge, but taj fastfell accidentally or missed his jump and went too far down
