Low antenna on a low band should give you good coverage over a few hundred miles - look up NVIS antennas - Near Vertical Incident Skywave, so long as you haven't got too many problems with junk PSU's / Plasma TV's, PLT etc....
The voice is perfectly intelligible. It was mainly posted for my own benefit to demonstrate the low noise floor that I enjoy on the HF bands, currently being free of PLT, Plasma and other spectrum polluting junk.
