  • Is lard that you buy from the store called tallow??? I make veggie soaps but have thought about making a "Grandmas Old Fashioned" tallow soap. I don't have the patience (or stomach) to render my own fat though. If I use lard from the store, is that the same thing?

  • Yes! Don't worry You can use lard :) LOL

  • I just came across this video! I am surprised that I didn't realize it was here. I feel quite in awe that you did this as per my vid!

I think that those pieces you removed are still full of fat. I try to cut my fat up with a meat slicer, just because it makes more edges.

Small chunks of pure fat are held together with membrane packaging. If you peel that away, then the fat will dissolve completely.

Your result will be far more fat than leftover bits.

    Did you make tallow soap?

  • Yes, I did make tallow soap and it was a great seller I have to make more asap because i'm very low. I took a small video to show you how it turned out. I called the soap " Grandma's old fashion soap"

  • I wanted to say that lol, She should have also removed the thin casing from the fat "kernels" to make it easier for the fat to cook down. I use 6 cups of water and 5 tblspns of salt for every 5 pounds of fat I render. I also use a food processor to grind the fat and it melts SUPER easy. This way may take longer but it yields a wonderful tallow. I also strain this batch 3 times to get all impurities out. HTH

  • I call it the same thing! Grin. Great minds think alike!

  • mince the fat first, fine as you can and put it in the pot with some water and a tsp of salt.Simmer it to render all fat. water stops the fat from "cooking" and allows solids to sink to the bottom. Cool and rmove solid fats, scrape away discolored bits.
