Jesus Taught - No Paid Preachers

When Jesus sent the Apostles out to teach the world about the Gospel he told them that they had freely received and they were to freely give. They were not to be taking money for the service they gave. The Prophets and Apostles had jobs and supported themselves through their own labor. Why can't modern day pastors do the same? Is being a preacher another form of entertainment or a profession like being a lawyer or accountant. Should preachers ever get rich?

A prophet is worthy of his hire? True or False?

@RevChise Obviously you don't understand what a Prophet is. All through the Bible the only people who took money for prophesying or claiming to serve God in any way were called FALSE Prophets. Read Micah 3:11 and see how well God thought of preachers who teach for hire and prophets who divine for money. The Apostles were not paid for their work, ever. See 2 Corinthians 11:9 where Paul says he never accepted payment for serving people and never would. Are modern preachers better than Paul?

@TheGospelReader I like your video perspective, however isn't there a difference between the roles of apostle vs. pastor?Paul was an apostle who traveled to spread the gospel to the world, but a pastor is a shepherd over one congregation, to stay put, as would as a shepherd watching over his flock of sheep. Wouldn't these 2 roles be different in capacity?

@tip862 They are very different roles with very different requirements and authority. Being a leader in the Gospel was never intended to be a job or career. It was to be a gift and could be. The proper idea is for the leaders to teach correct principles and for the people to govern themselves with honour and respect. If the Apostles supported themselves in their travels and efforts to build the kingdom, local pastors who were selected from local members could do the same.

@TheGospelReader Also in 1 Timothy 5:17-18 where it says "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward." A true labourer is not false. It seems that Micah 3:11 is about false prophets & opportunists who set their own prices, but a true labourer is rewarded by the people, as where 1 Tim 5:8 states.

@tip862 The reward was never intended to be money or anything worldly. The Savior and Apostles had support in the sense of food and other means so they could travel and not have to worry about worldly things but in every place where a church was established a local man was chosen to preside. He was expected, as Paul described, to be self supporting and not to be paid from the earnings of the local congregation. His service is to be his gift to people he loves.

Your exactly right!!!! I've felt this way for years, but when one tries to make this point among "Believers", it's almost as if a blinder comes on. The best advice my mom ever gave me was to read the Bible for myself. I ask the Lord to give me discernment and His meaning of what He means, and since then my eyes have never been shut to His gospel truth. Thanks for your willingness to speak up. We need more true men of God like you!
