This small, cheap, single-cassette RCA boombox didn't seem like anything special when I picked it up at a Goodwill store, but its sound quality on AM radio is AMAZING! The treble is crisp and clear and overall it actually sounds better than FM. It is a RP-7717A model, probably from the early '90s.

Here it is tuned to 1170 WWTR, a local AM station broadcasting Indian / South Asian music. You probably wouldn't know you're listening to AM unless I told you!

  • I think this is the best AM receiver I've ever heard. I really didn't noticed until I read the video description :)

  • @DrCassette It sounded even better than what my Aiptek camera's microphone was able to capture. But unfortunately it had a poor quality DC bias cassette recorder.

  • They don't make radios like this any more. More focus is put on FM than AM these days. Remember, AM can sound really good, it just depends on the receiver, not the way it is transmitted.

  • I have an RCA Boombox from 1996, that was possibly top of the line back then. Detachable speakers with built-in tweeters, dual cassette, CD, and Digital AM/FM Radio! Sounds really nice, and even has A/V input.
